Algae vs. Weeds in Wisconsin Lakes

"Weeds" and "algae" get used interchangeably by a lot of lakefront owners, but they're biologically different things with different causes, different health considerations, and different answers to the question of whether removal even helps.
Rooted weeds, in short
Plants like coontail, native watermilfoil, and lily pads are rooted, multicellular vascular plants, the same broad category as land plants, adapted to grow underwater. Filamentous algae and chara, in short

Blue-green algae is different
Blue-green algae, more accurately called cyanobacteria, isn't a plant at all and isn't a single species, it's a category of photosynthetic bacteria that can form blooms under warm, calm, nutrient-rich conditions. Unlike a rooted weed bed, which stays roughly where it grows, a cyanobacteria bloom can appear, move with wind and current, and disperse within days, sometimes concentrating along a single shoreline overnight.
Health advisories
Some cyanobacteria produce toxins that can affect people and pets on contact or if swallowed, which is why a visible bloom, often described as looking like spilled green paint or pea soup on the water's surface, warrants caution rather than assumption. Wisconsin's health and environmental agencies issue guidance during active bloom conditions; check current DHS and DNR advisories for your specific lake rather than relying on how the water looked last summer. What removal can and can't do
You can hand-remove or treat rooted weeds and get a durable result within the treated area, subject to the permit rules covered throughout this site. A cyanobacteria bloom doesn't work the same way. There's no equivalent hand-removal exemption for scooping out a bloom, and because it's driven by water temperature, nutrients, and weather rather than a rooted plant structure, physically removing the visible bloom on one day doesn't address why it formed or stop it from returning under the same conditions. The DNR's practical guidance for reducing bloom risk focuses on reducing nutrient inputs to the lake over time, not a one-time cleanup.
